New Todd Mills mystery is a real page-turner

Tribe

by R.D. Zimmerman Dell, $5.50 paperback

by Eric Hunter

Who wouldn't want to read a book that starts with the line "This was about sex"? Tribe, the second installment of mystery writer R.D. Zimmerman's Todd Mills series, grabs the reader with its first sentence ANN MARSDEN

R.D. Zimmerman

and doesn't let go until the final period on the final page.

Tribe picks up where Closet, the first book in the series, ended. Emmy Awardwinning television reporter Mills is trying to pick up the pieces of his life after the murder of his lover Michael. The murder set off a media frenzy which blew the door off of Todd's carefully constructed closet. Now he is out and without work for the first time in twenty years.

A call for help from Janice, an old friend and ex-girlfriend, draws Todd into a web of deception and danger which stretches all the way back to his college days. The son Janice secretly gave up for adoption has tracked her down and left her with his baby. Todd and officer Steve Rawlins, Todd's new romantic interest, come to her aid.

Instant Date!!

..

It has been said that pace, plot, and characterization are the three major elements in mystery writing. Zimmerman has mastered  ́all three areas. The pages of both Tribe and Closet seem to turn themselves. The story is dramatic enough to engage the reader while remaining realistic enough that the reader is able to identify with the characters. Zimmerman has created a cast of characters who could easily step off the page into our everyday lives. He makes especially good use of flashbacks to introduce and tauntingly develop the skeletons hiding in his characters' pasts.

"I want to be a good storyteller," Zimmerman said. "I am not interested in beautiful words or imagery. I want to tell a good story."

"I owe my writing career to the KGB," Zimmerman joked. He spent several years putting his Russian language college major to use as an agent for the U.S. Information Agency. During his tenure with the agency he was followed by the KGB which led to an idea for his first mystery, Cross and Sickle.

Zimmerman characterizes himself as a compulsive dreamer. “I am always thinking, 'What if?' I have a fair degree of followthrough. So, when I have an idea for a book I feel compelled to finish it."

With new forms of entertainment popping up all over, Zimmerman is very aware that he is competing for increasingly elusive entertainment dollars.

"Reading takes solitude and concentration," Zimmerman reminded me when we spoke. These are two commodities whose value is quickly falling in our break-neck paced culture.

Tribe and Closet are Zimmerman's ninth and tenth books. His first eight books had only minor gay characters, because Zimmerman was not out of the closet professionally.

"I didn't think it was an option. I was not willing to stake my career on it,” he said. That changed as an increasing number of authors came out with no detriment to their careers.

Zimmerman is quick to point out that he does not write gay mysteries. Rather, he writes mysteries which in some cases, such as the Todd Mills series, have a gay main character. Zimmerman wants to create a piece of entertainment which will also hopefully cross boundaries and break down stereotypes.
